
Macaroni Casserole
Ingredients
- 12 oz (340 g) elbow macaroni or other short pasta
- 1 tbsp butter or oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or turkey (optional)
- 2 cup milk
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or your favorite)
- 0.5 cup grated Parmesan (optional)
- 1 tsp salt
- 0.5 tsp black pepper
- 0.5 tsp paprika
- Breadcrumbs for topping (optional)
Steps
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook macaroni in a large pot of salted boiling water until just al dente; drain and set aside.
- Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook 3–4 minutes until soft.
- If using, add ground beef or turkey and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
- Sprinkle flour over the onion and meat mixture, stir 1 minute.
- Gradually pour in milk while stirring until a smooth sauce forms and begins to thicken.
- Stir in salt, pepper, paprika, and half of the shredded cheese.
- Add cooked macaroni to the sauce and stir until evenly coated.
- Pour mixture into a greased baking dish. Sprinkle remaining cheese and breadcrumbs on top if using.
- Bake 20–25 minutes until golden and bubbling.
- Let rest a few minutes before serving.
